Internet Explore 8 (IE8)

Microsoft is gearing up to start serving automatic upgrades to Internet Explorer 8. Fact is that the Redmond company has already debuted the Automatic distribution of its latest iteration of IE. In this regard, the software giant confirmed that IE8 RTW (release to web) was already offered via Automatic Update/Windows Update to all users running pre-release versions of IE8. Next in line are users of Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Explorer 7, which should start seeing IE8 served through WU/AU by the end of this month.

Microsoft underlined that end users would need to opt-in in order to install Internet Explorer 8. In this regard, the gold version of IE8, offered through WU/AU, will come with three options: Ask later, Install and Don’t Install, allowing users to postpone the installation, give it green light, or simply block it through the Redmond company’s update infrastructure.

Users still running IE6 or IE7 on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, or Windows Server 2008 will get a notification through Automatic Update about IE8. This rollout will start with a narrow audience and expand over time to the entire user base. On Windows XP and Server 2003, the update will be High-Priority. On Windows Vista and Server 2008 it will be Important.

Blocking IE8 from AU, still allows end users to manually download and deploy the browser from the Microsoft Download Center, or access it as an optional update from WU. Organizations that use Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) and Systems Management Server (SMS) can deploy IE8 in the same manner as they would deploy any other update. It will release to WSUS in July 2009; it will be classified as an Update Rollup and must be approved to install on groups of clients within the organization.

Firefox 3.5 Beta 4 is now available for download. The past week, as Mozilla made available Firefox 3.0.9, I was telling you that Beta 4 for what used to be Firefox 3.1 was just around the corner. Mozilla was in fact aiming to get the browser snapshot out by the end of the past week, and it managed to keep the slip down to a minimum. Users can now grab the fully fledged Firefox 3.5 Beta 4, offered in no less than 70 localized versions for just as many languages. Concomitantly with the release of the latest codename Shiretoko build, Mozilla also delivered a fresh security and stability update to version 3.0, namely Firefox 3.0.10.

Firefox 3.5 Beta 4 is a public preview release intended for developer testing and community feedback. It includes many new features as well as improvements to performance, web compatibility, and speed. We recommend that you read the release notes and known issues before installing this beta. Google Chrome

At the end of the past week, Google made available a new development milestone of the next iteration of the Chrome browser. The Mountain View company is making headway with the development of Chrome 2.0 and has now reached version 2.0.168.0.

At the same time, Microsoft is on the verge of releasing Internet Explorer 8 RTW, which has already been reported as being finalized, while Mozilla will rebrand Firefox 3.1 as Firefox 3.5, in the evolution from Beta 3 to Beta 4 of the next version of its open source browser.
“Google Chrome's Dev channel has been updated to 2.0.168.0. The highlights for this week: new – NTLM auth without automatic logon; Remote Desktop and Vista Theme changes now work nicely; new French and Polish dictionaries; and better support for PAC files and use of V8 to process them (use --proxy-resolver-v8 to try). Fixes: more improvements to full screen mode and many crash and stability fixes,” Jonathan Conradt, Google Engineering program manager, revealed.
Chrome 2.0.168.0 is a dev channel build, which comes to the table with fixes for in excess of 150 bugs. At the same time, Google has introduced a new version of its JavaScript engine. The Mountain View search giant indicated that “Update v8 to version 1.0.3.1 containing a fix for a crash bug in new 'eval' optimization code.”
At the same time, there are known issues with Chrome 2.0.168.0 that end-users have to be aware of. “Browser hangs if history page shows after clearing history. History tab search tab eats every alternate clicks Regression: about:network dialog shows up behind current Chrome window. Javascript alerts don't work in New Tab Page. Cannot switch to background Chrome window with modal dialog open. Copying most visited page screenshot and selecting paste and go causes crash. Bookmarking a page not reflected on history page when open. Browser crash on 'Remove/Remove All' of passwords,” Conradt added.
